Remember the shot in Matrix, where the spiders were harversting the grown children? There was a RenderMan shader, that made the shell bright as the spiders leg touched it. This Maya shader does tha same thing. (I made a simple spider as well to test it!).
Tweak the ramp called "r" and the "setDistRange" node and watch the effect.

- The basic phong model is NOT hard to implement.
- It is possible to write almost any kind of shader with MEL. And it's not that slow!

This is a Maya shader for faking reflected or bounced light, or creating a rim-lit effect. The variables are tweaked via the ramp node, which is is more or less WYSIWYG. Change the ramp colors to control the color and intensity of the rim-light and ambient color. Move the ramp colors up and down to control the squeeze and amount of light. Use the ramp interpolation to control the falloff. It works with any kind of shader and only augments the ambient color functionality so you can add your own color maps or whatever else you might want.

TJ Toon Shading Interface:
Creates a toon shader network that has no hidden features or locked areas, via a gui. The network can be tweaked with or without the interface at any level, allowing students and experts alike to work off of this shader, using the defaults, or tweaking it to their hearts desire.

This Shader produces a kind of chinese ink style outline, and a color which doesn't match
pefectly the outline, but is a bit bigger and partly transparent at the edges.
if it does look like a watercolor-painting is up to you to decide, but there is beauty in it, no doubt.
The interface is a bit improved and some transparency issues are fixed.
